The Sustainable Tourism Impact Fund, a collaborative effort between Agoda, WWF-Singapore, and the UnTours Foundation, is increasing its investments in eco-friendly tourism projects across Southeast Asia. The fund aims to help small and medium-sized businesses that are working to protect the environment, deal with climate change, and create economic opportunities for local communities.
The fund has announced its second round of investments, focusing on two innovative organizations:
Both organizations will receive $25,000 in loan capital to expand their environmentally friendly initiatives in the region. This funding will allow them to further their goals of protecting the environment and creating positive change in their communities.
Livingseas Asia, through its nonprofit arm, Livingseas Foundation, has already made significant progress in restoring degraded coral reefs in Padangbai, Bali. They have restored over 7,300 square meters of reef by using artificial reef structures and planting more than 320,000 coral fragments. This has led to a measurable recovery of biodiversity. The new investment will support the construction of modular housing for staff and trainees near the restoration site. This will help Livingseas Asia expand its operations and strengthen its ability to provide marine education, conservation training, and reef restoration activities.
Bambike Ecotours is creating a unique tourism experience by connecting bamboo agroforestry, fair trade bicycle manufacturing, and regenerative tourism. The loan will support the development of Ligtasin Cove in Batangas, a bamboo-built tourism destination. The destination will include coastal ecotours and a bamboo nursery for reforestation and erosion control. The initiative aims to create local jobs while expanding lower-carbon tourism experiences that connect travelers with community-led environmental restoration.
Six months after the fund's initial investments, early results across Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines are showing promising environmental and community impact.
This news is significant because it highlights the growing importance of sustainable tourism. As more people travel, it's crucial to minimize the negative impact on the environment and local communities. The Sustainable Tourism Impact Fund is a great example of how businesses, non-profits, and individuals can work together to support responsible tourism practices.
In our opinion, the Sustainable Tourism Impact Fund is a vital initiative that can drive positive change in the tourism industry. By providing financial support to small and medium-sized businesses that are committed to sustainability, the fund helps to create a more environmentally friendly and socially responsible tourism sector. We believe this approach is essential for ensuring the long-term health and well-being of both the environment and the communities that depend on tourism.
The Sustainable Tourism Impact Fund plans to continue investing in tourism enterprises that are advancing conservation, climate resilience, sustainable mobility, and community-led economic development. Tourism enterprises across the region advancing conservation, climate resilience, sustainable mobility, and community-led economic development are encouraged to apply for the next round of funding. This could impact the way tourism functions, making it more eco-conscious.
The Fund is part of Agoda's broader sustainability strategy and builds on its partnership with WWF-Singapore through Agoda's Eco Deals program. Agoda works with hotel partners across Asia to offer travelers discounted stays while directing a portion of proceeds to WWF's conservation initiatives.
We anticipate that the fund's continued efforts will lead to more sustainable tourism practices, increased environmental protection, and improved livelihoods for local communities across Southeast Asia. The future of travel depends on responsible and sustainable practices, and initiatives like this are leading the way.
